Our Curriculum

Our Curriculum Intent

At Pilton Infants' School, we firmly believe in working together to inspire our children to exceed their expectations as they develop personally, academically, and socially. Every child is recognised and celebrated as a unique individual within our school community. We believe that childhood should be a happy, investigative and enquiring time in their lives where there are no limits to curiosity, and there is a thirst for new experiences and knowledge.

Our curriculum is designed with our children's needs in mind to be exciting, relevant and fun. We aim to create the foundations for a lifelong love of learning with a focus on developing our children's core skills and knowledge in reading, writing and math while at the same time teaching them about the world around them, both locally and globally. We plan our curriculum through topics which are informed by the National Curriculum and wider local, national, and global events. We provide first hand learning experiences to bring learning to life and build on children's prior learning. Themes are planned and mapped as a whole school. We revisit and build on prior learning to embed this and carefully link subjects to ensure learning is meaningful, relevant, and engaging. Our planning program ensures our curriculum is rigorous but also retains flexibility to adapt learning to meet the needs and interests of the children.

Being able to explain and give reasons for our ideas, using appropriate vocabulary, as well as being able to listen to and understand the ideas of others are crucial skills in helping everyone to learn. Therefore, our curriculum and classroom environments are rich in oracy, and we prioritise talking throughout our curriculum.

We support children to develop interpersonal skills, build resilience, perseverance, independence, kindness, good manners, and become creative, critical thinkers. These positive attitudes reflect the values and skills needed to promote responsibility for learning and future success.

This is achieved with our school learning heroes:

  • Timmy Teamworker
  • Bobby Bounce Back
  • Carly Can Do
  • Carrie Caring
  • Billy Bright Idea

Children are celebrated each week for showing these qualities.

We are a school community who celebrate and welcome everyone. We teach our children to understand who they are, that everyone is different, and that we can embrace these differences. We inspire children to become responsible global citizens and to understand that they can make positive changes to the world around them starting now.

We believe collaboration is a key to success, whether that is in the classroom, between school and home, or with other schools and learning communities. We strive to ensure all pupils receive the same opportunities, regardless of their background. Children leave Pilton Infants' School with a sense of belonging to a community where they have the confidence and skills to make decisions, ask questions, make connections, and become lifelong learners.
