At Pilton Infants’ School our children have access to high quality music education which engages and inspires pupils to develop a love of music. We provide opportunities for all our children to create, play, perform and enjoy music. The children enjoy first hand learning experiences using a variety of tuned and un-tuned instruments; such as learning Ocarinas, Ukuleles, and Djembes. In Music we follow the National Curriculum. Music is a unique way of communicating that can inspire and motivate children. It is a vehicle for personal expression and we know it can play an important part in the personal development of our young children.

We have found that general communication on entry is an area of concern with a significant number of children. We have also found there is a lack of knowledge and memory of nursery rhymes and simple traditional songs. We use our voices expressively by singing songs, rhymes and chants through fun, active and engaging weekly singing assemblies and music lessons. Celebrating different musical cultures and great musicians is vitally important for our children living in rural North Devon, who have limited experiences of our culturally rich world.

We want to broaden their musical interests and experiences globally. We listen, discuss and explore the music which develops the children’s own creativity and compositions. We know that by providing all children with opportunities to perform, provides a platform for learning and raising standards in music. Being part of community events throughout the year, inspires and encourages a love of music that extends beyond the classroom. For example, our school choir singing in the Green Man Festival, Barnstaple Singing Festivals, School Christmas Fayre and our Christmas and Summer School performances.
